The 2025 Artificial Intelligence Ecosystem Report offers a comprehensive, data-driven analysis of the current expansion and prospects within various industries in Australia.
This report provides a detailed overview of the developments within the Australian AI landscape, revealing an increase in AI enterprises, a significant surge in AI-focused research, and a robust demand for skilled professionals.
Australia’s AI ecosystem comprises businesses leveraging AI to enhance operational efficiency. Concurrently, startups and research teams are innovating new tools and systems that foster business advancement.
The findings indicate that AI technology is permeating various sectors, with the energy, resources, utilities, and healthcare industries leading the adoption. Public companies in these fields are integrating AI into their foundational operations.
In contrast, private enterprises are more inclined to develop tools designed to streamline work processes across multiple industries.
Additional noteworthy insights from the report include:
Since 2015, AI-related hiring has seen a threefold increase. In 2024, 1,532 organisations sought individuals with AI competencies, predominantly concentrated in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth. The highest demand is for roles in business analytics, scientific research, medical diagnostics, and AI training.
There has been rapid growth in AI research. From 2015 to 2024, the number of AI patents climbed from 170 to 629, while research publications surged by 135%. Key sectors driving this growth include advanced manufacturing, resources, construction, and healthcare, all contributing to the fortification of Australia’s economy.
However, the report highlights a significant hurdle:
Australia accounted for only 0.18% of global AI patents over the past decade, indicating a pressing need for the nation to enhance its conversion of research into commercially viable products.
The National AI Centre (NAIC) collaborated with CSIRO to produce this report.
Lee Hickin, Executive Director of NAIC, emphasised the importance of the report as a vital resource for recognising national prospects.
This report serves as critical evidence for pinpointing areas where AI adoption is expanding and assessing the influence of AI on Australian industries, Mr Hickin noted.
Efforts are in progress to transform Australia into a globally leading digital economy, which includes generating additional employment opportunities and fostering economic growth. The forthcoming AI Capability Plan and Strategic Examination of R&D will focus on enhancing AI innovation and commercialisation efforts.
Furthermore, NAIC’s revamped AI Directory will facilitate better connections between businesses and Australian AI service providers. This updated platform replaces the previous AI Ecosystem Discoverability Portal, aiming to assist SMEs, government, and industry stakeholders in effectively accessing local AI expertise.
