Writing Google Ads That Don't Waste Your Budget

Most Google Ads budgets aren't wasted on bad ads. They're wasted on showing good ads to the wrong searches.

Google Ads can bring genuinely useful enquiries to a local business, and it can also quietly burn through a monthly budget on clicks that were never going to turn into customers. The difference usually comes down to a handful of basics: who you're targeting, which searches you show up for, and what happens after someone clicks.

Here's how to set up your first campaign more carefully, using BeesoftAI's Google Ads Copy tool for the writing, and keeping an eye on the parts that save the most money.

Step 1: Decide what a good result looks like

Before spending anything, decide what you want someone to do: call, fill in a form, or book online. That is the result you'll measure everything against. Set up conversion tracking so you can see when it happens. Without it you're judging your ads by clicks, which only tells you people were curious.

Step 2: Choose specific searches, not broad hopes

Think about what a real customer types when they need you, such as emergency plumber Parramatta rather than just plumber. More specific searches are often cheaper and closer to a buying decision. Google lets you choose how closely a search has to match your keyword, and tighter matching generally means fewer but more relevant clicks, which is a safer place to start with a small budget.

Step 3: Add negative keywords from day one

Negative keywords tell Google which searches you don't want to appear for. A cleaning business might exclude jobs and courses, and a business selling a service might exclude free and DIY. Add the obvious ones when you set up, then add more as you see real searches come in. This is one of the simplest ways to stop money leaking away on irrelevant clicks.

Step 4: Write the ads

Responsive search ads let you supply up to 15 headlines of 30 characters each and up to four descriptions of 90 characters each, and Google mixes them together. Those limits are tight, which is where BeesoftAI's Google Ads Copy tool helps. It drafts copy that fits within the limits and speaks to what the person was searching for, and a run costs 15 tokens. Give it your service, your area and what makes you different, then edit the results so every line is accurate and sounds like you.

Step 5: Send people to a page that matches the ad

If your ad says same day hot water repairs in Penrith, the page they land on should say that too, with a phone number or button visible straight away. A general home page loses people. The best ad in the world can't fix a landing page that makes someone hunt for what they were promised.

Step 6: Limit where and when you show up

Target the suburbs or radius you actually serve, not the whole country. If nobody answers your phone at night, consider showing ads only during business hours. These settings are easy to overlook and they make a real difference to a small budget.

Step 7: Check in weekly, and be patient with changes

Look at the search terms report every week for the first month. It shows the actual searches that triggered your ads, and it's where you'll spot irrelevant ones to add as negatives. Make small changes and give them time to work, rather than rewriting everything after two days.

The honest bit

An AI tool can draft ad copy quickly, but it can't know your margins, your capacity, or whether your landing page is any good. Check that every claim is true, since advertising can't be misleading under Australian Consumer Law, and Google also reviews ads against its own policies. Start with a budget you're comfortable losing while you learn. If you're spending a significant amount each month, it can be worth having an experienced person review your account, even just once.

If you're a small business doing this yourself though, careful targeting, negative keywords and ads that match the page they lead to will do more for your budget than any clever trick.
